D017-1314 is the black replacement nozzle for 4000-series and R-series uprights built without a clutch. The nozzle is the front housing of the cleaning head, the part that rides on the carpet, holds the brushroll chamber and channels everything the brush lifts into the airway.
Nozzles get replaced after impact damage or when the front lip has worn thin from years of use. Because this one is specified for the non-clutch machines, check your model first: clutched heads use a different assembly and the linkage will not transfer.
