Panasonic's 12 inch wood-core brush roll, part 84RBZD1000AM, is built for the MC-UG502 and MC-UG581 uprights. The spiral row of bristles works across carpet pile, prying dirt free from the fibers and carrying it toward the nozzle's airflow path.
A wood-core roll is heavier than a plastic one and holds its shape well over years of use, but the bristles themselves still wear down like any other brush roll. As they shorten, the roll stops digging into the pile and starts gliding over the top of it, so the vacuum sounds the same while cleaning noticeably less.
A roller that has taken on a wrap of hair and thread around its core has the same effect on cleaning even while the bristles themselves are still in decent shape, and it puts extra drag on the drive belt at the same time. Clearing that wrap out is worth doing whenever the roller comes out, whether or not a new roll is going back in.
