This is the small brush screw for the Kirby 510, an original Kirby fastener stocked as part 1463S. It holds brush roll hardware in place during reassembly, and it is exactly the sort of thing that goes missing on the bench and gets substituted with whatever is in the parts tin.

Substituting is where the trouble starts. A screw that is too long bottoms out, a screw with the wrong thread pitch strips the housing, and either way the component it holds works loose and rattles under vibration. On a machine this old the threads in the housing are the part you cannot replace. The screw is not.

Buy a few. They cost almost nothing, they are easy to lose, and having the correct one on hand is what stops a routine brush roll service turning into a housing repair.
