Suction on a C series canister that has faded gradually, rather than dropping the moment a bag filled, is usually the motor rather than the airway. Part 05101S is the carbon brush set for the 6165 suction motor used in those machines.

Each carbon block rides on the commutator under spring pressure and wears shorter with every hour of running. Once they are down to a stub the contact goes intermittent, and the machine starts announcing it: the motor sparks visibly through the vents, surges under load, or refuses to start at all until the canister is knocked or the switch worked a second time. That last symptom is the one most often blamed on the switch when the brushes are the actual cause. The distinction is easy enough to make at the bench: a switch fault is dead the moment it happens, while worn carbons give an engine that catches, runs and then fades.

A canister motor pulls its cooling air through the same passage as the dirt, so the brush gear inside a C series machine collects a fine deposit over the years even when the filtration is doing its job. That is part of why the carbons are treated as a scheduled item rather than a failure: they are consumed steadily, at a rate set by how much the machine is used.

Fitting them is straightforward provided two things are done. Blow the accumulated carbon dust out of the motor housing before the new blocks go in, since that dust is conductive and is what tracks across the commutator, and fit both blocks as a pair so they bed in evenly rather than sharing the load unequally for the first hour.
