Product details
Part CM021021 is the spring-loaded relief valve fitted to the Carpet Max commercial upright and related machines, opening to admit outside air whenever the machine's airflow is choked off rather than letting the motor labor against a fully blocked path.
This valve works audibly under ordinary conditions: an overstuffed bag or a clogged hose raises the motor's pitch, and a rising hiss from the valve signals it is bleeding in outside air to keep the windings from overheating under the strain. It fails in a quieter way. A valve stuck open lets the machine sound entirely ordinary while a portion of its intake arrives through the valve instead of up through the carpet fibers, so pickup fades with no burning smell, stall, or other obvious warning sign to point at.
Fitting a new valve brings back full suction at the nozzle along with the motor protection the design was built to provide, with no other adjustment needed anywhere else on the machine. A stuck-open valve is easy to miss during a routine walkthrough precisely because nothing about the sound gives it away, which is why it deserves a direct check whenever pickup complaints turn up on a unit that still starts and runs quietly. It is a cheap part to rule out early, before time gets spent chasing the motor or the belt instead.
