Part 1720410001 is the drive belt for the Dirt Devil 7200, covering the Style 4 and Style 5 belt positions. It transfers motor rotation to the brush roll, which is what does the actual work on carpet.
A belt is the cheapest part in the machine and the one that fails first. It stretches quietly for months, so the roller slows and the vacuum starts skimming over pet hair and thread instead of pulling it up. When it finally lets go, the brush stops dead, and most people smell it before they notice. Checking takes seconds: turn the machine over and try to spin the brush roll by hand against the belt. If it slides easily, the belt is finished.
Fit it with the sole plate off, looping it over the motor shaft first, then the brush roll, so it sits square in its groove.
