Dirt Devil Hand Cleaner Bel...

Product details

Royal's 501 and 503 hand vacuum cleaners share this style 1 belt, part 1232240001, sized for the compact housing these hand units use.

On both models the belt does the same job, carrying motor rotation across to the brush roll inside the small housing, so a stretched or broken belt has the same effect either way. Because nothing else drives the roller, the motor can sound completely healthy while the brush does almost no work at all, and that mismatch is the thing to listen for.

A hand vacuum's belt works in tight, frequent bursts rather than long continuous runs, and the small pulley diameter means even a slightly stretched belt shows up fast as reduced brush spin. If the roller barely turns or stalls the moment it touches carpet while the motor still sounds strong, the belt is the first thing to check before assuming a bigger problem.

Given the low cost of the belt relative to the vacuum itself, replacing it at the first sign of weak brush spin is usually more practical than continuing to run the machine on a belt that is already slipping, since a slipping belt can glaze the small drive pulley and shorten the life of the next belt too. Clear any hair wound around the roller before the replacement goes on, since a bound roller chews through a fresh belt at much the same rate as it did the old one.

  • Part: 1232240001, style 1 belt
  • Fits: Royal 501 and 503 hand cleaners
  • Symptom: weak or stalled brush roll with the motor still sounding strong
