Bag door catch, part D480-3200, listed for Simplicity, Riccar and Maytag uprights across the M700, S20 and R20 families. The latch is what clicks the compartment cover shut and keeps it pulled tight while the vacuum is running.

These fail quietly. The cover still closes, it just no longer draws tight, and suction at the nozzle tails off because air is sneaking in behind the bag instead of coming through the floor head. A new catch restores that positive click and the seal that goes with it. If the release lever is the broken piece instead, order D480-2300, which covers the R20P, R20UP, R20D and R20S machines.
