This dust cover seal (B480-4014) is the revised-thickness gasket that runs around the bag compartment cover on MV series Riccar and Simplicity uprights. It gives the cover something to compress against, so air is pulled through the bag instead of around it.

Seals harden and flatten with heat and age. When that happens the vacuum still sounds normal but cleans poorly, because unfiltered air is bypassing the bag through the gap. Fitting a fresh gasket restores the tight closure the airflow path depends on.
