Product details

Brush rolls spin on a pair of bearings, one at each end, and on the Eureka and Sanitaire SC899G upright, this is the ball bearing confirmed for the Vibragroomer I brush roll assembly. It is a small metal ball bearing sold individually rather than as a matched pair, which matters when only one side is making noise.

A worn bearing announces itself audibly well before it stops turning. Early on it is a faint grinding or grittiness heard when the roll spins freely with the nozzle lifted off the floor. As wear progresses, the roll starts running rough or slightly off-center, which shows up as uneven agitation across the nozzle width and, eventually, a belt that throws more often because the roll no longer spins true along its shaft.

Since the two bearings supporting a single roll log roughly the same running hours, checking the opposite one while the roll is already out is common practice, even when only one side is currently noisy. Replacing just the noisy side and reassembling the machine often means a second disassembly a few months later once the other bearing catches up in wear.

A bearing that grinds but has not yet seized is still worth replacing promptly, since a seized bearing puts extra drag on both the motor and the drive belt every time the machine runs, which can shorten the life of parts well beyond the bearing itself.
