A small part with a job out of proportion to its size: the post filter cover knob for the Bernina 6400 and 6600, Evolution part 01-7765-09. It threads in to hold the post-motor filter cover shut.
Lose it, or crack it, and the cover no longer clamps down. The compartment stops sealing, and air that should be going through the post-motor filter takes the easier route around it, which means the machine is quietly returning unfiltered air to the room while everything else about it seems perfectly normal.
The new knob threads on in place of the old one and pulls the cover flat again. It is the natural moment to look at the filter underneath, because if the knob has been missing a while that filter has been doing less than you think.
