It works downstream of the primary filtration, catching what gets past it before the air reaches the motor. That makes it both an air quality part and a protection part, and because it is out of sight it is the one people forget. A loaded secondary filter gives itself away in how the machine behaves rather than how it looks: less pull at the hose, a motor note that climbs, and a warmer exhaust than usual.
