This coupling joins two lengths of 2-1/2" vacuum hose, or connects a 2-1/2" hose to a machine inlet or wand end, wherever a run needs to be extended or a torn section spliced out. Parts catalogues list it against Shop-Vac machines running a 2-1/2" hose, which is the bore that size is most often found on.
A coupling only works if the joint stays airtight. Any gap where the hose slides over the barb lets outside air in ahead of the nozzle, and the vacuum loses pull at exactly the point where you need it most. This molded fitting is sized to grip snugly inside standard 2-1/2" hose so the seam does not leak once it is seated.
Hose bore is quoted differently from one brand to the next, so measure the hose you actually own rather than trusting the size printed on the machine. A wall thickness or barb profile that differs by a fraction is enough to leave the joint loose or refuse to seat at all.
It is a straightforward fix when an old coupling has cracked, split at the barb, or simply no longer holds a hose section tightly enough to stay together during use. Slide the new coupling into place, work the hose fully onto each barbed end, and the joint is ready to hold suction again. Because the fitting is a separate part from the hose itself, it lets you repair a single damaged section instead of replacing an entire length of otherwise good hose.
