F973 is the HEPA filter for Hoover's Rewind Elite upright, the U5507.
It handles the final stage of filtration, so the state of this filter is the state of the air leaving the vacuum. As the media loads, airflow through the machine narrows and the floor head stops pulling the way it did. Further along, the filter starts letting the pollen, dander and fine dust it used to hold pass back into the room.
Replacing it means lifting the old filter from its slot and setting the new one in place, no tools and a minute at most. Six to twelve months is the usual interval, shorter in a house with pets or anyone who reacts to dust. Confirm the U5507 on your machine's label before ordering.
