A raceway serves as the enclosed channel routing a power nozzle's internal wiring along its housing, and the hidden style used here keeps that wiring run out of sight rather than exposed.

Replace it once the channel has cracked or the wiring inside it has been chafed through years of the nozzle being lifted, dropped or dragged across furniture legs. A cracked raceway is also worth checking any time the wiring it protects starts behaving intermittently, since wiring left exposed by a broken channel is far more likely to chafe through than wiring that is still fully enclosed.
