Part 502204001 is the control lever for the Hoover F5591, F5915 and F6020 steam vacuums, a hand-operated lever mounted on the housing.
Levers and handles take more direct hand contact than almost any other part on a carpet cleaning machine, so they are also among the first to crack or snap off. Once it breaks, a perfectly good steam vacuum can end up sitting idle simply because there is nothing left to grip, even though the machine underneath it may be in perfectly good working order.
Three machines are named for this lever, the F5591, F5915 and F6020, so read the model designation off your machine's rating plate and check it against those. Steam vacuum levers are not interchangeable across every Hoover line, and two machines that look nearly identical side by side can take different parts.
The replacement goes in without modification in place of the original. Work with the machine unplugged, keep the fasteners you take out together in one place, and move the new lever through its travel by hand once it is fitted, so you know it runs freely across its full range before the machine goes back into use.
