This is the upper half of the motor housing for the Hoover model 913, Hoover part 42195504. It caps the motor and forms part of the sealed duct that turns motor speed into suction at the nozzle, so it is doing structural and airflow work at the same time.
Housings break when a machine is dropped or when years of heat have made the plastic brittle around the screw bosses. A hairline crack is enough: air finds the gap, the seal around the motor is lost, and the vacuum sounds as busy as ever while picking up noticeably less. A broken boss also lets the motor sit slightly off its mounts, which adds vibration or a rattle at speed.
With the housing open it is worth checking the motor gasket and the brushes before everything goes back together.
