This is the black plastic extension wand for the Hoover S1015 canister, part 70204, supplied with the locking pin that fixes it to the hose at one end and the tools at the other.
Wands get dropped, trodden on and used as a handle to drag the machine across a room, and they fail in two ways: the tube cracks, usually at a collar, or the pin stops locking. A wand that no longer locks lets a tool pull off mid-job and bleeds air at the joint, so what you feel at the end of the wand is a good deal less than the machine is actually producing.
Check the pin engages fully before you put weight on the wand, and the connection will hold through above-floor work without dropping tools or leaking suction.
