Hoover Royal Type B Upright...

Product details

Type B is the paper bag Royal specifies for its uprights, and part 2066247001 packages ten of them, the same bag Hoover lists under the C1320.

An upright of this kind stays healthy mostly because somebody keeps a fresh bag in it rather than because of anything clever in the mechanics. Push one past capacity and the paper stops passing air the way it should, which the operator feels immediately as a heavier, less responsive head, while the motor spins against a wall of restriction it was never built to fight for long, and it runs noticeably hotter to the touch than it does with a fresh bag installed. Worse than a full bag is a torn one, since once a seam lets go, debris bypasses the paper entirely and heads straight toward the fan blades.

A box of ten covers a household in regular use for several months at a stretch, and there is no real downside to changing early beyond the minor cost of the bag itself, which is trivial next to what a motor working overtime costs in wear over the same stretch. Checking the door seal at the same time as a bag change is worth doing, since a loose seal lets unfiltered air slip past the bag entirely. Keeping the box where the machine is stored rather than in a distant cupboard also helps, because a change that takes half a minute tends to get done and one that takes a trip does not.
