Part B222-1300 is the foam filter that sits inside the motor cover on this Riccar upright, positioned to give incoming air one more pass before it enters the motor. It catches grit and fine dust still carried in the air that reaches the motor.
Foam like this compresses and discolors with use. Once a pad has flattened and darkened enough to choke airflow at the motor inlet, the motor runs hotter than it should, and sustained heat is what shortens a motor's working life, which is why this pad is treated as a scheduled swap rather than something to keep cleaning and reusing. Hold the removed pad up to a light source: patchy gray shading across the whole surface is ordinary wear, but a section that has gone solid black, matted flat, or worn through to a hole means it has stopped filtering there.
