Part 601689A is the retaining clip used on the motor sprocket gear and the rear axle of Kirby uprights, supplied in a pack of ten. It is the small clip that keeps those components located on their shafts.
Clips are easy to lose and easy to overlook. They ping off during a strip-down, or fatigue and let go on their own, and what follows is a gear or an axle that walks sideways on its shaft. The machine develops a clicking or grinding under drive, the transmission feels rough, and left alone the shaft and the part riding on it wear each other away.
