These black handle lock buttons, Kirby part 136684A, come two to a pack so you can fix the machine and shelf a spare. The button engages the handle lock on classic Kirby uprights — most commonly the Heritage II (2HD) — letting the handle latch upright for storage and hold its angle while you clean.
It is a small piece that takes spring pressure every time the handle moves, so eventually it cracks, or pops out and vanishes under the furniture. Once it is gone the handle flops freely and will not stay upright. Pressing a new button into place during a handle service brings the latch back in minutes; while you are in there, check the latch mechanism itself for wear.
Beyond the Heritage II, the same button fits the Heritage I, Legend I, Legend II and Tradition 3CB, so one pack covers any of these classic Kirbys in the house.
