The ratchet lock, part 631589A, is what holds a Kirby's handle at each of its set positions - upright for storage, part way for open floor, flat for reaching under furniture. It is the toothed piece the handle release engages against.
Teeth round off. When they do, the handle stops holding a position: it drops from upright on its own, will not stay flat, or clicks straight through the detents without catching any of them. On a machine as heavy as a Kirby that turns a routine job into a two-handed wrestle, and it is the sort of fault that gets lived with for years.
Kirby used this part across a long span: Classic Omega 1CB, Classic III 2CB, Tradition 3CB, Heritage I and II, Heritage II Legend, Legend II, Generation 3, G4, G5, GSix, Ultimate G, Diamond Edition, Sentria, Sentria II, Avalir, Avalir 2 and Avalir Platinum.
