This replacement belt lifter cap spring (Part #144156) supplies the tension that holds the belt lifter cap in place on the Kirby Sanitronic VII. It keeps the lifter set where you position it.
With a broken or missing spring, the belt lifter will not stay in position, which makes it impossible to hold the brush roll reliably engaged or disengaged. A fresh spring restores the tension the cap needs so the lifter locks into carpet or bare-floor mode. It is a small part that governs whether the whole mechanism holds.
