This is a secondary filter kit, part 86883, built around electrostatic media. A secondary filter is the stage that sits after the bag or bin and before the motor, catching what the first stage missed so the fan and windings stay clean.
It is the filter most people forget. It loads gradually, and because nothing dramatic happens you tend to blame the bag or the hose when suction fades. Held up to the light, a spent one is grey right through and stiff to the touch; a fresh one is open enough to see daylight through.
Fit it in place of the loaded filter with the same face toward the motor, and plan on changing it once or twice a year depending on how hard the machine works. Check the size against your filter bay before ordering, as the compartment varies between machines.
