Motor assembly for the Maytag M500 upright, part D220-4000. The same motor fits the Riccar R10S and the Simplicity R10S.
By the time a motor is worth replacing it usually announces itself: suction that has faded over months rather than overnight, a note gone rough or shrill, the smell of hot varnish after ten minutes of running, or a machine that cuts out and restarts on its own. Worn bearings and short brushes cannot be brought back, and at that point the motor is the repair.
Unplug the machine before starting and match the wiring to the original as it comes off. It is worth confirming the airway is clear first, since a blockage upstream of the motor produces most of the same symptoms and costs nothing to rule out.
