Oreck part 77002-02 replaces the lower handle tube on the XL21-600 upright and its close relatives, the section that runs from the machine body up to the point where the upper handle and grip take over. It carries the same daily abuse as any lower tube on a machine used every day: dragged up a flight of stairs, leaned on to haul the vacuum backward across a room, occasionally dropped with the handle extended and nothing to absorb the impact but the tube itself.
Straight-line pulls rarely bother it, so damage instead concentrates at the fixing holes near the base, where a bend or a hairline crack begins and spreads slowly under repeated flexing. Once that happens, the machine tends to drift slightly off a straight line as it is pushed, and the handle stops folding flush against the body, usually the first clue an owner notices well before anyone bends down to inspect the tube itself.
If the machine's power cord runs along the handle, trace and note that path before the old tube comes out, then set the replacement up along the identical run rather than guessing. Once the old part is free, check both fixing holes for elongation before mounting the new tube, since a hole already worn oval by the original screws can let a fresh tube develop identical play within a single season if it goes unnoticed.
