This O-ring seals the motor assembly on Oreck's XL and U series uprights, part 430000960, seated in its groove to keep the motor's air path closed off from the surrounding housing. A worn or flattened O-ring is a quiet failure. Suction drops a little at a time rather than all at once, so it is easy to blame the bag or the filter before anyone checks the seal underneath the motor.
Rubber compounds harden and lose their give with age and heat cycling, and once an O-ring stops conforming to the groove it sits in, air finds the gap. That is a leak the vacuum cannot recover from no matter how clean the filter is kept, because the loss happens before the airflow ever reaches the bag.
It fits a specific group of machines rather than the full XL or U lineup, so check your model against the list below before ordering.
Make sure the groove is clean before fitting, and press the ring fully into place before drawing the motor housing back together. A ring that is twisted or only partly seated will pinch as the housing closes, and a pinched O-ring fails again almost immediately, undoing the repair before the machine even gets its first run. Take a moment to run a finger around the full circumference once seated to confirm it lies flat and even before the last fasteners go back in.
