The lens has one job: shield the bulb from bumps and debris while letting the light through clean so it lands on the carpet where the nozzle is about to pass, useful under furniture and along baseboards where a room's overhead light rarely reaches.
Once cracked, the bulb behind it takes the next hit directly, since nothing is left standing between it and whatever knocks the machine takes during normal use.
