As the rigid tube connecting the hose to the attachment head, it takes the brunt of being stepped on, dropped down a stairwell, or snapped right where it meets the hose cuff on a small portable unit.

A cracked tube leaks air right where the machine relies on a sealed path to hold suction, so a hairline split near the cuff typically shows up first as weaker pickup at the attachment rather than a total failure.
