A momentary switch only holds contact while it is being pressed — let go and the circuit opens. On floor equipment that is a deliberate safety behaviour: the machine stops the instant the operator releases the control instead of continuing to run unattended. Switches also take more electrical wear than almost anything else on a machine, and a failing one shows up first as intermittent starting or a head that cuts out partway through a pass.
