This is the rear wheel axle for the Powr-Flite ProLite upright vacuum, catalogued as part B010-2000. The axle is the steel shaft the rear wheels turn on, and it carries the back end of the machine every time the operator tips it back to move.
An axle is usually replaced for one of two reasons: it has bent, so the wheels no longer track straight, or it has worn at the bearing surface and the wheels have developed play. Either shows up as a machine that will not roll evenly. It is sensible to fit new wheels at the same time, since a worn axle has almost always chewed the wheel bores along with it.
