F286 is the primary exhaust filter for the Hoover UH70600 and UH71009 WindTunnel bagless uprights, and the same filter is used across several of Hoover's related bagless machines, including the Elite Rewind, the WindTunnel Max and the WindTunnel 3.
A bagless upright recirculates its own dust. When this filter packs solid the motor is pulling against a wall: you hear it working harder, the brush roll leaves lines of dirt behind, and fine gray dust starts showing up around the exhaust vent.
Hoover's manual covers cleaning it, but there is a point past which rinsing stops helping. If the media stays gray after drying, or the frame has come away anywhere around its edge, it needs replacing rather than another wash. Check your model against the UH70600 or UH71009 before ordering.
