R8086 bundles together the internal wiring for a Rexair-Rainbow E series canister, connecting the cord entry point through to the switch and on to the motor itself.
Given the age of these machines, an electrical gremlin is just as likely to be sitting somewhere in that bundle of wire as in any single component it links. A few patterns show up again and again on old Rainbow canisters: the vacuum dies the instant the body gets bumped or set back down, it only keeps running with the cord held at one specific angle, or it flatly refuses to start even though the wall outlet checks out and the switch tests fine sitting on its own. Decades of heat cycling leave old insulation brittle enough to crack from ordinary handling, and crimped connections gradually work themselves loose over those same years of use, which is why the fault so often turns out to be systemic rather than a single bad connector. A quick visual check alone frequently misses this kind of wear, since brittle insulation can look intact until it's flexed.
Swapping the entire harness eliminates the wiring as a suspect in one step, rather than probing individual connections with a meter and hoping to catch the fault.
