Part B431-1700 is the handle retainer for Riccar 8000 and Simplicity 7000 series uprights. The retainer locks the handle into the body of the machine so the assembly stays rigid while the operator pushes, pulls and reclines the vacuum through a cleaning pass.

A worn retainer shows itself as a handle that rocks in its socket or drops out of position under load. Left alone, that movement works the joint loose and puts strain on the cord and harness running through the handle, so it is worth correcting as soon as the play appears.
