Base plate stud for Simplicity and Riccar 4000 and 6000 series uprights, part B015-0305B. It anchors the base plate to the nozzle housing, giving the mounting screw something solid to thread into rather than biting into stripped or worn-out plastic.

The threads inside a stud wear out well ahead of the screw that mates with it, and once those threads are stripped, the base plate can no longer sit down flat and even across the nozzle. That shows up as a base plate that rocks, rattles when the nozzle moves over carpet, or will not seal flush against the floor on one side, which lets suction leak out at the gap instead of pulling through the brushroll.

If the base plate has been off for belt work more than once, check every stud on it rather than just the one that failed. A plate with one good stud and one stripped one will still rock under load, and the loose side will strip the new stud in turn if the underlying hole is also worn.
