B236-0131 is the charcoal strain relief boot fitted where the power cord exits the housing on Simplicity and Riccar vacuums. Its job is to keep the cord from flexing sharply at that one point every time the vacuum is moved or the cord is wound up for storage.
Without a good boot in place, the cord takes the bending stress right at the housing edge instead of across a wider curve, and that is exactly where cords fray and eventually expose bare wire. That kind of failure is progressive, so a boot that already looks flattened or split is worth replacing well before it lets the cord fray.
Check the cord closely at the housing entry for nicks or exposed strands whenever you find this boot cracked or missing, since the two failures usually show up together on a machine of any age.
