Product details
Part B389-0400 is the HEPA media filter listed for four compact canisters: the Riccar Moon and Zazz, and the Simplicity Jack and Snap. One part number covers all four.
A compact canister gives its filter far less media area than a full-size upright does, so it loads faster in proportion to how much the machine actually runs. The change is gradual rather than sudden. Suction on carpet and upholstery fades first, well before anything looks dirty, and once the media is saturated the motor is left pulling against that restriction, which usually shows as extra heat and a higher running note alongside the lost pickup.
This filter is only half of the machine's filtration. The secondary filter for the same canisters is a separate part, B389-0500, and a fresh HEPA filter sitting behind a loaded secondary still starves for airflow, so it is worth checking both at once rather than replacing one and assuming the job is finished.
Seat the new filter fully in its housing and confirm the access door closes flush against it. A filter that sits proud of its seal lets air past the edge instead of through the media, and dust that should have been caught ends up back in the room or working toward the motor. If the door meets resistance, take the filter back out and look for a lip or a tab that has not dropped into place rather than pressing the door shut against it, since forcing a cover closed over a filter that is standing high is what cracks the housing tab that holds the seal in the first place. Compare the old filter and the new one side by side while both are out, which is also the quickest way to catch a wrong part before it is in the machine.
