Three parts of a Royal metal upright's front end come together in this one assembly: the bracket that mounts the headlight, the socket the bulb sits in, and the bumper guard that protects the housing on contact. Part 2870060A00 replaces all three as a single unit.
The bumper half of this assembly does the heavier lifting day to day. It is the buffer between the vacuum's metal body and whatever it bumps into during a normal pass, baseboards, cabinet toe-kicks, chair and table legs, so a machine running without it risks marking up trim and furniture on contact rather than absorbing it harmlessly. Once the bracket cracks or the bumper separates from it, both the headlight mount and that protective buffer are gone together.
