Between the bottom casing and the cover over the motor and cord reel runs a seal most owners never see. Part 6186 is that seal, and its job is to make the joint airtight so the machine draws through the bag and filters instead of pulling from inside its own shell. It is listed for the C1.1, the C2.1 and the C3.1.
A gasket that has hardened, shrunk or torn opens a bypass at exactly the point where suction is strongest. The signs are vague — slightly weaker pickup, a faint whistle, dust appearing inside the body — which is why this item gets overlooked while people change bags and filters that were never the problem. Seat the new one fully into its channel before the halves go back together, and wipe the mating face clean so it beds evenly.
A C-series canister uses several seals and they are not interchangeable, so match the number to the joint. This one closes the panel over the motor and reel down onto the lower shell (6197DG). The motor cover itself is sealed by 6306. The bag compartment door has its own gasket, 6187, and the microfilter is sealed by 6034. Where the leak is at a moulded joint rather than a panel edge, the foam seals are 6213 at the front, 6120/3 at the rear and 6128 behind the release button. Every one of those is listed for the same C1.1, C2.1 and C3.1 machines.
