Product details

When an older upright starts to wander instead of turning cleanly, the left-hand bracket at the foot of the steering neck is worth examining before anything else. SEBO 5728 is that bracket in the version secured by two screws, drawn as item 110 on the sheet headed AUTOMATIC X4 X5 and intended for the earlier 5320UL base.

Chassis identification comes first with this one. Production of AUTOMATIC X4 and AUTOMATIC X5 machines spans two different bases, and the later one is served by a single-screw support instead, so a quick look underneath before ordering saves a return. On the earlier base this bracket resists the sideways force applied whenever the handle is laid over to run the head beneath a sofa or a bed. What gives way is the plastic around the screw holes: it splits, the neck picks up a little free movement, and the cabling passing through the joint begins taking the flex that the bracket used to absorb.

  • Suits: AUTOMATIC X4 and AUTOMATIC X5 machines using the earlier 5320UL base
  • Side: left hand
  • Fixing: two screws
  • Part number: 5728
  • Diagram position: item 110, AUTOMATIC X4 X5 sheet
  • Opposite side: 5178, the two-screw right-hand support for the same base
  • Single-screw versions: 5479 left, 5480 right

Neither support is part of the complete neck. SEBO sells that separately as 5729UL under item 104, which stands for items 105 to 108 and 111 and leaves items 109 and 110 to be bought on their own. The bearings inside the joint are separate numbers again — 5717 for the left side, 5101 for the right — so a worn steering neck can be rebuilt in stages instead of replaced entire. Genuine SEBO part, shipping in 2–5 business days.
