Product details

The Avalir Platinum drives its rear wheels through a transmission assembly, sold as part 552323G. Kirby carries the machine itself under model number 7970, so a listing naming the Avalir Platinum and a listing naming Kirby 7970 are pointing at the same vacuum rather than at two different ones.

Rotation from the motor passes through this assembly to push the machine forward across carpet on its own rather than needing to be pushed by hand, while a neutral setting inside it still allows the vacuum to be moved freely whenever self-propel is not wanted.

Self-propel rarely quits all at once; it tends to fade first. The machine starts to feel heavy on carpet, engagement becomes inconsistent whenever direction is changed, or a new rattle builds from underneath the base as load increases, and once the internal gearing has actually worn down, no amount of external adjustment restores the original feel.

Open the base and cycle the drive between forward and neutral by hand before ordering, since a loose cable or lever can mimic a worn transmission and costs far less to fix if that turns out to be the actual cause. That five minute check has saved more than one owner from replacing a part that was never actually the problem.

  • Part: 552323G, transmission assembly
  • Fits: Kirby Avalir Platinum, Kirby 7970
  • Function: drives the rear wheels for self-propelled operation, holds neutral for free movement
  • Replace when: self-propel feels weak or uneven, or a base rattle grows under load
