The upper cyclone sits directly above the dirt cup on the Eureka 4484 upright, the moulded chamber where incoming air is spun hard enough that debris drops out of the airstream before it ever reaches the filter. It is the separation stage that keeps a bagless upright bagless in practice, not just in name.
Cyclone housings develop cracks right where the sealing lip meets the mounting tabs, most often after the dirt cup has been dropped, or wrenched off at an angle one time too many while emptying it. Once the seal breaks down, the machine stops separating properly. Fine dust bypasses the cyclone and loads straight onto the filter, suction falls off within days, and the cup stops filling the way it used to because debris is landing somewhere else in the airpath instead.
This is part 607053, the direct replacement upper cyclone for the 4484. Fitting one restores the separation stage to a single, sound piece rather than a cracked or worn one straining to still do its job.
Replacing the cyclone alone, rather than the whole dirt cup assembly, is worth doing first if the cup and lid are otherwise in good shape, since the cyclone is usually the only piece actually damaged when separation performance drops. Pair it with a quick check of the dirt cup gasket while it is apart, since a seal issue there can produce the same dust-bypass symptoms as a cracked cyclone and is easy to rule out while everything is already open.
