F400B is the large white pre-filter for the Austin Air HealthMate, the same wrap-around first stage as the black F400A in the color that suits the lighter cabinets.
It sits directly against the main filter cylinder and catches the coarse material: hair, lint, carpet fluff and the larger dust that would otherwise embed itself in the carbon and HEPA media behind it. Because it takes the brunt, it loads faster than anything else in the machine.
Run a loaded pre-filter and you get less air out of the purifier and a shorter life from the filter that actually costs money. The good habit is to look at it every few months and change it on a schedule rather than waiting for a visible mat of gray felt. It slips on and off the cylinder by hand.
