This is the end cap for a wooden agitator used in full-size power nozzles, part B350-3242. It fits over one end of the brushroll, and the bearing surface that the roll spins against is machined into this cap, so the cap's own condition, not the wood core or the bristle strips, decides whether the agitator spins straight inside the nozzle housing.
Hair and thread collect tightest at the ends of a turning brushroll, and the drag and heat that buildup creates wears an end cap out well ahead of the bristles it sits next to. A brushroll riding low on one side, a knocking sound as it spins, or bristles wearing down unevenly toward one edge all point to a worn end cap rather than a worn roll.
