Behind the brush button on a Bissell Healthy Home upright sits the micro switch that actually makes and breaks the circuit. That switch is part 2031347, and it is what to order when the button itself feels fine but nothing happens when you press it.
A tired micro switch gives itself away in stages: the brush roll cuts out when the handle is reclined, it runs only while the button is held at a certain angle, or it stops responding entirely. Because the fault is electrical rather than mechanical, no amount of cleaning around the button will help.
It serves the Healthy Home 5770, 5990, 6100, 6405 and 16N5, plus the Heavy Duty 50C9 and 93Z6. Unplug the vacuum before opening the handle housing, and note which terminal each wire came from before you pull them off.
