The secondary filter on a Bissell Healthy Home upright is the stage that catches what the first filter misses, and it is the one owners forget about. Bissell part 2031374 replaces it on the 5770, 5990, 6100 and 6405.
A blocked secondary filter behaves exactly like a blocked hose. The motor note rises, the head gets hard to push, and suction at the nozzle falls away even though the dirt cup is empty. A loaded filter also lets fine dust drift through to the motor, which is the expensive part of the machine. If yours is grey rather than its original colour, or has gone stiff and will not spring back when pressed, fit a new one.
Check it each time you empty the cup, and keep a spare on the shelf so the vacuum is never run with the filter missing.
