The square black button on a Bissell Healthy Home upright that switches the brush roll on and off is a serviceable part in its own right: number 2031317. It is the button itself, the piece your thumb presses, and it is a common failure on machines that have seen a decade of use.
You will know it has gone when the button sticks down, feels mushy, or has to be held at a particular angle before the brush roll will run. Sometimes it stops returning at all and the brush stays powered on hard floors. None of that means the motor or the wiring is bad. Usually the button has simply worn where it bears on the switch behind it.
It fits the Healthy Home 5770, 5990, 6100, 6405 and 16N5, and the Heavy Duty bagless uprights 50C9 and 93Z6.
