This fiber washer is used in pairs on Eureka Lexan fan assemblies, part 53148, sold as a 10-pack that covers five fan installs at two washers each. The washers seat on either side of the fan where it mounts to the motor shaft, keeping the fan properly located and balanced as it spins at motor speed.
A fan running without its washers, or with washers that have compressed and thinned out, can sit slightly off-center on the shaft. At the speeds a vacuum motor runs, even a small amount of imbalance shows up as vibration and a change in the motor's normal sound, and over time that imbalance adds wear the shaft and bearings were not designed to take.
