The handle control lever on a Hoover WindTunnel upright is what lets you kick the machine out of its upright lock and lay it back to reach under a coffee table. This is the late-model version, part 440010718, for the U6430 handle control and the U6600 series, including the U6441900, U6450900, U6458900 and U6470900.
It gets pressed several times a room, every session, for years, and the failure is mechanical: the lever cracks at the pivot or the return goes stiff, and the handle either refuses to release or will not lock back upright. Neither state is workable.
A replacement restores the original tension and geometry, so the catch drops cleanly and holds where it should. Check the data plate before ordering, since this is the late-model lever.
